The woman responds. “I am alone And I see a yellow desert … Sand, only sand for miles Or maybe acacia trees With large red flowers Blooming like blotches of blood” Shortly after, Fahmida Riaz, a poet and dissident, left dictatorship Pakistan for New Delhi, India. She took her poem, titled “Won’t You Look at the Whole Moon?”, with her. Across the border, this Urdu poem about artmaking, state repression, and shifting landscapes of belonging was published in Hindi, while Fahmida remained in India for the next seven years to escape capital punishment. In between, friends smuggled her poem back to Pakistan and published it in Urdu. Like her poem, she remained untethered, between homes and languages, constantly questioning where freedom lay and what it looked like. Again and again, she says, “Main chali ja rahi hoon” “I am going away”, without ever completing the thought. Fragments of a Fugitive Poem speculates that Fahmida’s poem has continued to rove ever since, crossing borders and historical periods in search of resolution. Through multi-channel video, immersive soundscapes, and live performance, the work maps sites across Delhi, Karachi, and Bombay that mark Riaz’s story, imagining how she might encounter these spaces today. A rose garden in Delhi, the shorelines of Karachi and Bombay fading into each other, a cricket match at a roadside eatery, the Embassy of Palestine, Ghalib’s grave, sites of protest that have been disappeared. At every location, we hear the voices of passersby responding to prompts from Riaz’s poem, reflecting on what home and freedom mean to them. Each person lends a new verse to Riaz’s text, becoming a poet in their own right. The sea and desert—leitmotifs in Riaz’s poetry—emerge as metaphors for exile and rootedness, separation and solidarity. In one corner, rare archival audio from Riaz’s exile years is reworked into a screenplay-like text, inviting viewers to wander the space, to choose their own paths through these collaged meditations on freedom—its absences, intimacies, and futures yet to be imagined. -- Fragments of a Fugitive Poem was created for the Tenth Anniversary celebrations of G5A (Mumbai) in response to the theme of “Freedom”. The project emerges from archival research, interviews, and fieldwork across New Delhi, Mumbai, and Karachi. series of drawings and screenplays that emerged from my time spent in residential houses across South Bangalore—spaces that double up as film and television sets. What drew me in was the way cinema quietly rearranges these homes—not just their walls and objects, but their rhythms, routines, and roles. Curtains are changed, furniture pushed aside, light filtered and bounced. What appears on screen is seamless, but behind it is a choreography of labour that often goes unseen. In these homes, I witnessed a strange folding of cinema into everyday life. The resident families aren’t just passive hosts—they begin to speak the language of cinema. The owner advises where to place the camera. A daughter might find herself cast as a child actor. Over time, some families come to sustain this as a business, leasing out their homes for multiple productions. In some cases, the house even adopts the name of the series once filmed there—becoming “the Milana house” or “the Kadambari house”—as fiction leaves its mark on the architecture. I became especially interested in the people who live within this recursion—inhabiting a space that is both home and set, private and staged—where daily life folds into cinematic staging, and the labour of film quietly reshapes how space is lived. The presence of these shooting houses often marks the edge of the city. On the outskirts, the logistics of production—generator vans, shoot permissions, crew accommodation—are more easily arranged. Out here, homes stretch into sets, and domestic architecture becomes a kind of frame for cinematic infrastructure: the width of a living room to allow dolly tracks, the height of a ceiling window to let light in, the gloss of a kitchen’s interior to match the look of a serial. Slowly, a modular way of thinking emerges—about homes, domesticity, cinema, labour, and the growing city around them. During these visits, I wasn’t allowed to film while the shoot was in progress, as the production had to be kept under wraps to avoid leaks. So much of my role became that of an observer—watching from the sidelines as scenes were staged and restaged, as routines of work and waiting unfolded across the day. I began noting down moments when something slipped: when cinema, staging, architecture, domesticity, and the people—both residents and crew—seemed to overlap in unexpected and often idiosyncratic ways. These fragments, specific to the conditions and character of each house, began forming the foundation of this project. Alongside this, I also began measuring and mapping each house, drawing out its floor plan as another kind of record. The drawings in this book begin with architectural plans of these houses. Over them, I’ve drawn gestural lines that track the movement of camera crew, lights, props, and people across the house over the course of a day. Each plan is paired with a scene, or an event, that unfolded while I was there, inside the very real architecture of a living home. I wanted to use the form of the screenplay here because the actions and the spaces unfold as you read them—and remain suspended in the present continuous. The screenplay carries within it a potential: for action, for staging, for mapping, and for rehearsing both space and fiction. I began to see this work as a way of understanding how cinema physically embeds itself into domestic life—how the structure of a home can be rewritten through cinematic action, and how the memory of a shot lingers long after the crew has left. Several practices andobjects associated with cinema are often identified using terminology onlyunderstood by those in the the filmmaking fraternity. This invisibility is both violenceand possibility to those it envelopes. Jamal-ud-din-Yakut and Razia Sultan in the 13th-century Delhi Sultanate and the real-life romances of African-Indian couples provides the fictive ground for Dispatches. Employing this speculative love story and the concrete stories of the present helps interrogate the dilemma that still exists with the notions of belonging, memory, and the idea of landscape with regards to the African Identity in this country. Excerpts of abstracted landscapes and architectural motifs from the Kamal Amrohi period film Razia Sultan plays out on monitors in a series of installations across several sites that have come to be claimed by the African community in contemporary Delhi. With time suspended on its surface and left in limbo, the sites we see like allegories to the future of our ancestors. The Film City with it's—constructed hospitals, hotels, and neighborhoods—resemble a deserted post-apocalyptic city, whose inhabitants have disappeared. The tour bus, loaded with visitors, navigates this seeming abandonment of this city. The Biodome originally served as the Velodrome for the ’76 Olympics and now houses an indoor zoo, where they have recreated four ecosystems of the Americas. The site lies somewhere between the real, artificial and the staged. I was interested in the role of the staff who work in the premises of the Biodome, as they inevitably move between spaces of reality and fiction. I was interested in the mind of these people who reveal their relations to the site, by concocting fictions, which emerge between the architectural space and the potentiality of its narrative. <img - A digital collaboration brings together artists Arshi Irshad Ahmadzai, Sanket Jadia, Manjot Kaur, Salik Ansari, and Tonoy Sharma, on the invitation of Amshu Chukki, in partnership with Avid Learning, to forge an experimental screenplay that challenges conventional narrative boundaries. The work assembles a mosaic of disparate fragments—ranging from archival imagery of the demolished Babri Masjid, a voyeuristic view from a Kabul balcony, digitally rendered environments, and the intimate mise en scène of an artist’s friend’s studio, to raw camera log data, meticulous garden measurements, and reflective lockdown diary entries. In this re-envisioned narrative, diverse landscapes—both real and imagined—interweave through layers of recollection and speculative retelling. Each contribution serves as a discrete vignette, yet together they evoke a fluid, poetic terrain where memory, perception, and desire coalesce.
